20th annual Relay for Life July 19-20 in Morris
MORRIS, Minn. -- The 20th annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Stevens County is set to take place at Pomme de Terre Park on Friday, July 19. Registration is from 5 to 6 p.m. and the local committee invites the entire community to join them to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those lost to the disease and fight back as a community.
This year’s event begins with the Opening Ceremony at 6 p.m. with honorary survivor Joan Spaeth as this year’s speaker. Teams have been fundraising year round and will gather to walk the track throughout the night.
Following the first official laps, a free will supper will be served in the park shelter. Other activities include a silent auction, games and performances by the Hancock Dance Line, Morris Area High School Drumline and Jazz Band.
The Luminaria Ceremony will take place after sundown when the walking path will be surrounded with candle lit bags that bear the name of someone who has battled cancer. Luminaria can still be purchased for $10 by calling 324-7184 or by visiting www.relayforlife.org /stevenscountymn.
Cancer Survivors are invited to register between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. They will receive a t-shirt from the American Cancer Society and are asked to lead the first official lap of the event.
Funds raised at Relay For Life of Stevens County enable the American Cancer Society to touch the lives of those impacted by cancer within the community. Donations help support programs such as Hope Lodge, a free home away from home for cancer patients and their caregivers while undergoing treatment. Advocacy efforts ensure government funding for programs like Sage, which makes life saving screenings available to under- and non-insured women. Programs such as these are made possible thanks to generous donations through Relay For Life.
