Women's advocates, survivors, and supporters from across Minnesota are expected to gather for the 2009 Action Day to End Violence Against Women Rally to challenge the State Legislature to work to end domestic violence and sexual assault.
The rally is noon, Wednesday, Feb. 11, at the Minnesota State Capitol Rotunda.
Stevens County Attorney Charles Glasrud and District 11 Sen. Bill Ingebrigtsen will attend the rally.
The groups state that there is legislation that needs to pass this session for the safety of domestic violence and sexual assault survivors, and that it is critical to promote justice, provide safety, and prevent future harm for women and children.
Domestic violence and sexual assault survivors and activists will speak at the rally joined by Bill Ingebritson, Rep. Erin Murphy, and Commissioner of Public Safety, Michael Campion.
There will also be a memorial to the 2008 victims of domestic violence homicide presented by Glasrud, Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom and St. Paul Police Sgt. Ann Bibeau.
Action Day to End Violence Against Women is sponsored by: the Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women (MCBW), the Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MNCASA), the Minnesota Indian Women's Sexual Assault Coalition (MIWSAC) and the Minnesota Network on Abuse in Later Life (MNALL).
Following the rally, displays in the State Capitol Great Hall will include:
· The MNCASA Signs of Sexual Violence Project (also displayed in the State Office Building, the tunnel connecting the SOB and the Capitol and by the Capitol Rotunda).
· The MIWSAC Barrette Project, honoring survivors of sexual violence.
