Alexandria to turn purple next week
Alexandria will be turning purple next week.
Not out of anger but to raise awareness about the fight against cancer.
Douglas County Relay for Life organizers are calling on residents and businesses to support the "Paint the Town Purple" effort on July 6-10.
The kick-off will be Monday, July 6 at the Big Ole statue near North Broadway at 6 p.m.
Volunteers are needed to help tie purple ribbons on lamp posts in the downtown area.
A contest is also planned to select the best decorated business or business window that promotes the "Paint the Town Purple" idea.
To participate, businesses must display a Relay for Life poster in their store or window. Posters will be given to businesses when they register for the event.
Small purple ribbons will also be given to teams and businesses that participate.
"Join us to 'Paint the Town Purple' and decorate your display window in purple," noted Jo Cory, Relay for Life event chair. "If you don't have a window to decorate, you can be creative and tie in anything purple within your business, such as having a dress purple day, interior/exterior purple decorations, balloons, flowers. Decorate your sidewalk with purple chalk art or anything decorative you can come up with - just think purple."
Judging to award traveling trophies will be conducted next week. Winners will be announced at the Relay for Life, which takes place at Citizen's Field at Jefferson High School on Friday, July 10, starting at 6 p.m. The event runs until 6 a.m. the next morning.
The Relay For Life brings together people to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and empower individuals and communities to fight back against the disease.
