For years, Marv Meyer was the face of the annual walk-run event at the University of Minnesota, Morris held in conjunction with Prairie Pioneer Days.

Now, the event bears his name, too.

Meyer, a long-time teacher and coach at Morris Area, established the walk-run about 20 years ago, and it seems fitting his name leads an event that promotes his ideals: fitness and health, said organizer Jen Lund.

The Marv Meyer 2K & 5K Walk/Run and 10K Run is Saturday, July 12, beginning at the Regional Fitness Center on the UMM campus.

Check-in is 7 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. at the RFC.

The 5K and 10K races begin at 8 a.m., and the non-competitive 2K Family Walk/Run begins at 9:30 a.m.

There are registration fees charged for both the walking and running events.

Proceeds go to the Morris Area High School track team, for childrens toys at the RFC, and to the Sam's House Orphanage in Nepal.

Sam's House, which is about a year old, has reached its capacity with 20 children. Morris residents Chris Butler and Jennifer Rothschild can provide more information about an expansion project planned for the orphanage, or visit the orphanage Web site at www.sams-house.org.

Medals will be awarded for the top finishers in the 5K and 10K runs, and t-shirts will be guaranteed for those who register before July 1.

The walk/run event features ribbons and prizes, and t-shirts will be guaranteed for July 1 registrants. For families, there is a maximum of three t-shirts per family, with an additional charge for additional shirt orders.

Local businesses are being invited to contribute to the event, Lund said, by calling the RFC at (320) 589-6485.

Registration forms are available at the RFC or on-line at www.regionalfitnesscenter.com. The Web site also offers training tips for 5K and 10K runners.
