Application period open for Master Gardener Program
If you have an interest in plants and gardening and would enjoy sharing that interest with others, apply to become a University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener. Applications are being accepted for the Stevens County Extension Master Gardener Program now until Nov. 1, 2013 (in some counties the deadline is earlier).
Individuals selected for the program begin an internship that starts with the Master Gardener Core Course training which begins Jan. 13, 2014. The course is taught online or in-person on the University of Minnesota St. Paul campus. Instructors are University of Minnesota Extension educators and faculty.
Following the course, interns are to complete 50 hours of volunteer time in the first year working with local Master Gardeners on a variety of projects that educate the public about gardening and horticulture. To fulfill the 50 hour requirement you can answer plant questions by phone or in an information booth, do pre-recorded or live radio spots, write a newspaper column, or make a presentation to a community group. Projects and events in Stevens County to become involved with may include Hort Night at WCROC, an information booth during the county fair or at the Farmers Market held in Morris, and bi-monthly county Master Gardener meetings.
After completing the internship, you become a certified University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener. To remain certified, Master Gardeners must contribute at least 25 hours of volunteer service annually.
