Army National Guard 2nd Lt. Charles B. Michealson has graduated from Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga., and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

Michealson is the son of Dale and Elizabeth Michealson of Morris. He is a 2007 graduate of Morris Area High School. He received a bachelor's degree in 2010 from the University of Minnesota, Crookston.

The candidate is tested on leadership skills and team work abilities required of a commissioned officer. Students learned to utilize acquired skills to function in "leader and follower" positions in squad and platoon sized elements, and evaluated in various leadership garrison positions while in a stressful and demanding field environment.

During the 12 weeks of training, the officer candidate received "basic soldiering" instruction in leadership, professional ethics, soldier team development, combined arms tactics, weapons defense, combat water survival, squad drill, intelligence, field training exercises, day and night land navigation, confidence obstacle course, common core tasks, communications, staff and general military subjects, and physical fitness tests which include three, four and five-mile runs, and foot marches between 5-12 miles carrying rucksacks.

Lucas Schmiesing of Chokio received a bachelor of science degree in Natural Resource Management, with an emphasis in Biotic Science Resources, from North Dakota State University on May 11, 2013. Schmiesing is a 2009 graduate of Chokio Alberta High School and the son of Randy and Karla Schmiesing of Chokio.

James Newhouse of Hancock has been awarded the Rooster Booster scholarship from Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa. These scholarships were established by a group of dedicated Dordt College supporters who wish to encourage financially needy and deserving students who strongly desire to attend Dordt College for Christian higher education.

Kayla Evink has made the spring 2013 dean's list at Minnesota State University, Moorhead.

Jennifer Buchanan, daughter of Eric and Sarah Buchanan of Morris; Samantha Buro, daughter of Richard and Judy Buro of Morris; and Tyler Meichnser, son of Dean and Rita Meichsner of Morris; have been named to the dean's honor list at Concordia College in Moorhead. To qualify for this designation, students must carry a minimum of 12 semester credits and have a grade point average of at least a 3.7 on a 4.0 scale.
