Area Weather: Are there warmer temps in our future?

We have started the New Year off on a cold and snowy note in portions of the state. Snow moved across western and southern Minnesota on Wednesday.

Canby received about 6" of snow, Dawson 6", Granite Falls 5", Milan 5", Morris 5", Donnelly 5", and Mankato about 3".

Across extreme southern Minnesota, law enforcement were encouraging no travel Wednesday evening due to the snow and blowing snow. The Artic air returned on the backside of this system and brought very cold air and dangerous wind chills Wednesday night into Thursday morning. The low in Friday in Morris was 16 below zero!

There is some great news, however, on the horizon. We should see some 20s by Sunday and into next week!

WEATHER HISTORY

In 1982, Jan. 9-10 saw some of the coldest wind chills ever seen in Minnesota. Temperatures of -30 and winds of 40 mph were reported in northern Minnesota. This would translate to wind chills of -71 with the new wind chill formula, and -100 with the old formula.

WEATHER FACTS

What color is snow? Snow is actually clear or transparent. Snow appears white because the crystals act as prisms, breaking up the light of the sun into the entire spectrum of color. The human eye is unable to see that kind of "sensory overload." Therefore, we see the snow as white or sometimes blue. In addition, the color of snow can depend on the environment in which you live. If you live in a place where your soil is red--snow will look like it is pink or a light red color.
