We are about three weeks ahead of schedule for our weather this year.

Area farmers are loving it as they should be able to get into the fields to plant their crops early this year. Temperaturewise we are averaging about 13 degrees warmer than normal for the month.

Despite the nice weather, April can be an active weather month. In Minnesota, on average, we receive about three inches of snow during the month of April.

April can also be an active month for thunderstorms, and tornadoes have been known to hit this month. In fact, tornadoes are not uncommon even in March in Minnesota. In 2005 and in 1998 the first tornadoes of the season in the state were reported during March. These were reported in southern Minnesota down in Mower and in Nobles counties. Our most recent tornado during the month of April was reported in Nobles County in 2004. Most of the first tornadoes of the season take place, however, in May.

By the way, Severe Weather Awareness Week this year is April 19-23. Of course, this is a time to get ready for the upcoming severe weather season. We will have some tips as always to keep you and your family safe in this very column in the coming weeks and on KSAX-TV at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. Have a great weekend and enjoy the mild temperatures!
