Area Weather: Chance for storms continues through weekend

Email

This week marks the anniversary of the tornado outbreak that killed three people around the state on June 17, 2010.

Tornadoes that day touched down in Mentor, in northwest Minnesota. In addition, a tornado hit the Albert Lea area, leaving a great deal of destruction. The most devastating of the tornadoes, however, hit the city of Wadena, where a tornado tore a path a mile wide and 10 miles long through the area.

The tornado was an EF-4 on the Enhanced Fujita scale. What does this mean? It means that it had peak wind gusts of between 166 to 200 miles per hour. The Enhanced Fujita scale assess the strength of the storm based on the damage that it caused to structures.

What is remarkable to me in this outbreak, is that only three people were killed around the state and that no lives were lost in Wadena. One woman, unfortunately, was killed by the storm in Otter Tail County in the town of Almora. With the widespread destruction, it is amazing that more people weren't hurt or killed in the state.

The City of Wadena is an amazing community that always pulls together and will be an even stronger and better community. I tip my hat to the residents as they continue to rebuild after this tragic event.
