Area Weather: Cold temps won't climb before next week
For Christmas it was the snow that we had to deal with, but for New Year's Day it as the cold that was the big problem. Many spots in the state experienced lows in the 25-degrees to 35-degrees below zero range over the weekend. On Monday, International Falls was 36-below zero while Bemidji and Crane Lake both hit 32-below zero.
Most of this week, we will continue to see below average temperatures. Our 30 day outlook shows equal chances of either above or below normal temperatures. That sounds like double-talk doesn't it? What it means is that there is nothing out there, right now, that indicates a big warm-up. We should see a bit of a warm-up into next week.
By the way, the 30 day outlook calls for below-normal precipitation. However, we could see some light snow for Wednesday into Thursday. Two to three inches of snow is expected by Thursday morning along and south of the Minnesota River with amounts decreasing back to an inch near the I-94 corridor. Another surge of Arctic air will push into the state on the backside of that system before that warm-up begins. Stay warm and have a great week!
In 1942 the temperature rose from 32 below zero to 41 degrees above in just 24 hours in Pipestone! Other parts of the state also saw a big warm-up in a short period of time.
The wind can be a real problem on cold days during winter. The Wind Chill Equivalent Index is a calculation of how cold it feels outside when temperature and wind speed are combined. When winds combine with freezing temperatures the result is an air temperature that can feel significantly colder.
