Area Weather: Conditions were ripe for storms this week
Morris Minnesota 607 Pacific Avenue 56267

It was quite a day across the state on Tuesday as severe weather spawned two tornadoes around the area. One tornado hit the town of Swift Falls Tuesday afternoon and another tornado did additional damage to the town of Spicer.

Conditions were favorable for severe weather as dew points were in the upper 60s and lower 70s as the cold front and area of low pressure moved through that warm and moist air.

Thankfully no injuries were reported in those two towns. There were homes and businesses along with a ballpark damaged in Spicer. The damage was even worse in the Swift Falls area.

Heavy rain also fell around the state. Brainerd received five inches of rain while Fergus Falls picked up nearly three inches of rain. Unfortunately, only .49" of rain fell at the airport in Morris. We can certainly use a great deal more rain. In the storm's wake much colder air settled in across the state.

The high on Wednesday was only 73 degrees. This is nearly 10 degrees colder than average! Record low temperatures were also reported around portions of the state. We should warm up a bit for the weekend. Highs should return to the mid to upper 70s with a few lower 80s possible for Sunday. Have a great weekend!

WEATHER HISTORY

In 1970 a tornado sliced right through the center of Miltona. Also, in 1867 possibly the greatest "unofficial" rainstorm took place in Minnesota history. Nearly 36 inches of rain was recorded in 36 hours near Sauk Centre. Flooding was a huge problem.

WEATHER FACT

The average lifespan of a tornado is less than 15 minutes.
