This is a difficult column to write this week following the news that KSAX-TV has ceased operations. I won't go into the reasons behind the decision as a news release was issued and stories went out across the state about the closing. What I will address is my love for the Alexandria area and for all of you.

As most of you know, I started at KSAX-TV in 1999 when my now good buddy Mark Vanderwerf gave me a call. Having grown up in Willmar it was an honor to come work for this TV station in central Minnesota. I had traveled around the Midwest working radio and TV from Fargo, Grand Forks, Willmar, Dubuque, Joplin. It was a chance to put down some roots close to home when Mark offered me the job as TV "weather guy". This was a place where my mom and dad, my five siblings, and the rest of the family could watch me on a daily basis. For some reason, they got a kick out of it!

My wife and I did leave in 2004 for an opportunity for me to become chief meteorologist in Cedar Rapids and Des Moines, Iowa. However, our love of family and the Alexandria Lakes area did bring us back to KSAX-TV in 2008. This area, and its great people, have been a big part of our lives. That is why I even wrote a song about Alexandria for the Chamber of Commerce called "Easy to Get to, and So Hard to Leave." The song can be found at if you are curious.

None of us know what life has in store for us. However, please know as my song about Alexandria states, "you'll always be in my heart, as you were from the first time and we'll never part..."

Thanks for all the great friendships and memories. Thanks too for trusting me with the weather for all of these years. We will always be grateful for our time here where it's "easy to get to, but so hard to leave..."

All the best and here's to sunshine and better days.

Mark Anthony, Chief Meteorologist

Weather history: On this date in 1876 the latest known ice breakup in Duluth took place.

Weather facts: The breakup of a river ice cover can be both fascinating and perilous, "owing to ever-changing ice conditions and dynamic processes that sometimes lead to extreme flood events caused by ice jams."
