Area Weather: No repeat of '91 storm in forecast

Halloween is coming up this weekend and it is always fun to look back at one of the craziest storms that hit the region and spoiled many plans for the kids and their trick-or-treating.

The Halloween Blizzard of 1991, as it is referred to for good reason, began Halloween afternoon and lasted for three days across the region. The Eastern half of the state took the brunt of it as the Twin Cities Metro area received 28.4" of snow. Duluth received a whopping 36.9" of snow--this is the largest single storm total in Minnesota history!

Most of West Central Minnesota saw between 4" to 8" of snow. However, many locations in Central Minnesota picked up from 8" to 20" of snow! I was working radio in Iowa at the time and we, like many locations in Southern Minnesota, dealt with an ice storm.

It looks like rain will be a possibility for this Halloween with the possibility of some light snow mixed in at times. Thankfully, it doesn't look like it will be anywhere near like the Halloween Blizzard of 1991. I can hear some sighs of relief...Happy Halloween!

WEATHER HISTORY

In 1960 a 29 day dry stretch in west central Minnesota finally ended with some spots receiving a half inch of rain.

WEATHER FACTS

Most lightning strikes average 2 to 3 miles long and carry a current of 10000 Amps at 100 million Volts!
