Area Weather: precipiation possible during the week
The musical group Sly and the Family Stone had a hit song back in 1969 called "Hot Fun in the Summertime." I don't know of very many people having a great deal of fun with the recent heat across the nation.
My brother works outside in the heat. Like many, he has been sweating out the water that he drinks just as quickly as he can guzzle it on some days. We also had a family reunion in Glenwood and the family camped at a park near Lake Minnewaska. Needless to say, those that were camping couldn't wait to take a plunge into the lake every hour or so during the warmest points of the day between 10 am and 6 pm. After this heat wave, the family is considering having our annual family reunion in September as opposed to July.
Is it fair to react this way in our lives? This is an unusual year, however. The average monthly temperature for the area is 77.2 degrees as of Monday. That is nearly seven degrees warmer than average. Coupled with the heat, the most recent U.S. Drought Monitor has about 80% of the nation in drought conditions. An upper level ridge has kept much of the nation stuck in the same weather pattern, and with little relief.
There is some good news, however. Of course we did get some scattered showers over the weekend and earlier this week. The 10 day outlook calls for above average temperatures, but they will be cooler than where we have been recently. In addition, the outlook calls for slightly above normal precipitation during the period.
Most of the nation can use all the help it can get from the heat and drought. This is being defined as an "Epic Drought." It is the worst the nation has seen since 1956. Here's hoping for some nice rainfall across Minnesota and much of nation!
Mark Anthony, Chief Meteorologist
Weather history: On this date in 1976 temperatures across most of Minnesota climbed into the upper 90s and lower 100s as a terrible heat wave gripped much of the Midwest.
Weather fact: What is the definition of a drought? According to the National Weather Service it is a "condition of moisture deficit sufficient to have an adverse effect on vegetation, animals, and man over a sizeable area."
