Area Weather: Un-autumn-like weather prevails
Last weekend was great for most of the area and so was the start of the week!
There were a few scattered showers early on Saturday across the state, but then high pressure moved in late in the day and skies cleared. Highs were generally in the upper 70s and lower 80s across the region. Sunday, however, sunshine was found in abundance!
Sauk Centre reported a high of 80 degrees and a low of 59 degrees, Elbow Lake reported 81 degrees, and Long Prairie hit 84 degrees for a high. Temperatures this week will remain above normal.
Highs the next couple of days will be 10 to 15 degrees above average. As my wife told me when she heard that it would remain warm, she said that is "nifty!" By the way, the first day of autumn is Sept. 22. I love the fall colors but winter can't be too far around the corner and for some of you, that isn't so "nifty!"
In 1911 Pipestone was hit with baseball-sized hail that smashed numerous windows at the Calumet Hotel and high school. A local weather observer measured hail three inches deep. People got their photos taken in automobiles surrounded by the icy white ground.
The record for the item carried farthest by a tornado is a personal check that travel 223 miles from Stockton, Kansas to Winnetoon, Nebraska. The event took place in a F-3 tornado in 1991.
