Area Weather: Winter 'officially' begins Dec. 21

The region continues to get back to "normal" after our first significant snowstorm of the season. Road crews were busy Tuesday and Wednesday trying to clear all of the snow. Portions of the state received nearly a foot of snow!

The Morris area reported from 2" to 3" of snow. Of course, that was some very light and fluffy snow! The winds were strong as well and that whipped that snow around and reduced visibility in open areas. Many schools in southern Minnesota were cancelled on Wednesday. Wind chill values dipped to 20 to 30 below zero.

Temperatures will warm-up a bit for the weekend. We should see some teens returning to the region. We could see some additional snow for Monday and Tuesday. For the latest on road conditions this winter season you may call 511.

Be safe and keep that winter survival kit handy as winter doesn't officially arrive until Monday. It looks like it just might be a long winter.

WEATHER HISTORY

In 1983, nine cars fell through the ice at the same time on Buffalo Lake in Central Minnesota. There were only five to six inches of ice on the lake at the time.

WEATHER FACTS

Snow kills hundreds of people in the United States each year. The primary snow-related deaths are from traffic accidents, overexertion, and exposure. However, deaths from avalanches have been steadily increasing with people mountain climbing and also with people building homes closer to mountains.
