Assistant Stevens Co. Attorney takes oath of office

Assistant Stevens County Attorney Carl Thunem took the oath of office Tuesday, June 5. County board chair Larry Sayre administered the oath.

Thunem was hired for the position of assistant county attorney for Stevens County in January, but was on deployment to Kuwait at the time. Thunem is a captain with the Minnesota-based Army National Guard Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team. As a contracting officer representative with the Brigade Special Troops Battalion, Thunem provided support and training to the soldiers at Camp Arifjan. Some of his activities included teaching classes on resume writing and developing connections with Minnesota employers to acquaint them with National Guard members and their experiences.

Thunem was working as a judicial clerk in Jackson County before his deployment.

The assistant county attorney's position if four days a week and with focus primarily on civil cases, such as custody battles or child support delinquency. He plans to eventually add a part-time private practice.

Thunem earned his law degree from the University of Minnesota in 2007.
