Babe Ruth tourney action starts
Tournament play began Monday for the Morris Area Babe Ruth Baseball League.
Black 10, Gray 9
Andrew Rentz drove in Eric Riley with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning as Black defeated Gray in the first round of the playoffs. Gray had tied the score on a two-run homer by Ryan Beyer in the top of the inning.
Tanner Kirkeide picked up the win in relief of Brandon Staples who threw the first five innings.
Mac Beyer pitched well for Gray in the loss.
Tanner Picht led the Black offense with a double among his three hits and he scored three times. Patrick Backman contributed two hits and a walk.
For Gray, Beyer had three hits and Tyler Hansen also had three including two doubles.
Black 8, Orange 5
Black rode the momentum of their earlier win to defeat regular season champion Orange, scoring five runs in the fifth inning. Kirkeide picked up his second win of the night, pitching the first four innings. Riley pitched three innings of shutout ball for the save.
Bryan Shaw and Daniel Nelson pitched for Orange.
Austin Steege went 3-for-4 with five RBIs to lead the attack for Black. Picht added two triples among his three hits.
Jordan Fletcher had two hits for Orange and Brody Bahr had one and scored twice.
Green 5, Red 4
Green upset second seeded Red to advance in the winners' bracket.
