Strong northwest winds of 30 to 40 mph, with gusts of 45 or 50 mph, moved into west central Minnesota earlier today in the wake of a strong cold front. Blowing snow is widespread, creating blizzard conditions near and west of a line from Alexandria to Willmar and Olivia.

A blizzard warning remains in effect until midnight. A wind chill advisory goes into effect at midnight and will remain in effect until noon Tuesday, the Weather Service said. The blizzard warning and windchill advisory are for an area that includes Pope, Lac qui Parle, Swift, Chippewa, Kandiyohi, Renville and Yellow Medicine counties and the cities of Glenwood, Madison, Benson, Montevideo, Willmar, Olivia and Granite Falls.

Travel continues to be difficult in many areas due to blowing and drifting snow. Temperatures are forecast to fall throughout the evening, leading to slick roadways and potentially dangerous windchills.

According to the Weather Service, the windchill could fall to 25 to 35 below tonight. Lows could reach 8 below zero tonight and 17 below Tuesday night. The high on Tuesday is projected to be 1 below zero.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation has pulled its snowplows from the state highways until early Tuesday morning. Kandiyohi County has also done the same.
