Here it is summer already and Prairie Pioneer Days is soon upon us. The Friends of the Morris Public Library have traditionally organized a book sale as a fundraiser at this time. Thank you for your many donations. The book sale will be Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hard copy books are $1 and paperbacks are 50 cents. There will also be an assortment of audio materials.

There seems to be some confusion about our Saturday hours. We are open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, throughout the year. Hours are: Monday - Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed Sundays.

A literary arts festival is being planned and organized for March 2011 by University of Minnesota, Morris staff. As I understand it, six authors, poets and playwrights will be invited to visit Morris next spring. The community will have plenty of opportunities to suggest who these authors might be. Stay tuned and get involved, it will be a community-wide event!

Our Summer Reading Program is alive and well. Some 350 children are participating by reading and having fun at the library. The next big event is Thursday, July 8 with Magician Star at 10:30 a.m., sponsored by the Friends of the Library. The Bug Guy follows her act Thursday, July 22 at 6 p.m., with funding from the legacy grants for library programming. The Summer Reading Program ends July 29. There is still time to make a splash at your library.

The budgeting process for next year is underway and this past couple of years has not been fun. Due to cuts in aid to cities this year's library budget was cut by 5 percent. If cuts continue to be made, the cuts for next year may be even worse. Although library services provided to the community are "free," there are costs involved. Libraries are paid for by taxes and if taxes are cut, the library's budget will be cut. The choices are hard ones. Either we cut hours or we cut the materials budget and programming. Your legislators need to hear from you, if you value the services the library provides to its community. Speak up and let your voice be heard!

Remember, the library is closed Monday for Independence Day.
