NEW LONDON -- Benson/Hancock plated four runs in the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the home-half of the inning to edge New London-Spicer 6-3 Monday in the season opener for both.
Benson/Hancock had runners on first and second with two outs when a NLS error put the Brave/Owls up 3-2. Kelsey Hammerschmidt then hit a two-run triple, which turned into a three-run play as an errant throw on the relay into the infield allowed Hammerschmidt to score and give Benson/Hancock a 6-2 lead.
Hannah Stehn drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom half of the seventh for NLS, which left the bases loaded when the non-conference game ended.
Kayla Jones struck out five, walked six and gave up five hits in a complete-game win for the Brave/Owls, who got a 2-for-3 performance at the plate from Becca Hoffman. Amanda Radel fanned eight while issuing only one walk in a complete-game performance for NLS.
