After high school, Kern received her Associate of Arts Degree from Itasca Community College (ICC) in Grand Rapids, Minn., and her Associates of Applied Sciences Degree from Ridgewater College in Willmar, Minn. Her major was professional photography technology.

Sports have always been a huge part of Kern's life, along with her passion for photography. While attending ICC, Kern was hired for her first newspaper sports reporting experience with the Scenic Range News Forum in Bovey, Minn.
