Burdell Lawrence Barsness, son of Carl Barsness and Betsey (Lerdahl) Barsness, was born Dec. 29, 1917 in Walden Township in Pope County. He grew up in New Prairie Township and attended rural country school. Following his schooling, he worked for area farmers. On June 18, 1944, he was united in marriage to Ruth E. Larson. The couple lived and farmed in the Cyrus area. In 1982, they retired and moved into Cyrus. Burdell and Ruth enjoyed spending many winters in Arizona. Ruth died on April 10, 1995. Burdell continued to live in Cyrus until July of 2010, when he moved to Skyview in Morris. In August he became a resident at West Wind Village, where he continued to live until the time of his death.

Burdell was a member of Scandia Lutheran Church and later Trinity Lutheran Church in Cyrus. He enjoyed collecting old tools, camping, traveling the countryside and checking crops.
