On Thursday, the Storm took a tough loss to Minnehaha Academy after the Redhawks scored four goals in the third to take the game 10-3.

On Friday, the Storm faced the Fairmont Cardinals, who lost to Prairie Centre in a 5-0 shutout the day prior. Both teams hadn’t won a game all season, so it was a good matchup for a third place game that Fairmont won 4-3 in overtime.

The Storm faced off against the host team, the Minnehaha Academy Redhawks, in game one action on Thursday, Dec. 26.

The game involved three ties and stayed close until midway through the second period when the Redhawks went on a spree, scoring their last seven goals in 18 minutes of play, leaving the last 2:20 of the game holding a hefty 10-3 lead.

The Storm got on the board first with a goal by junior forward and point-leader Taner Gimberlin at 2:52.

The Storm sent two to the penalty box at 6:56 in the first, putting the Redhawks on a 5-3 power play advantage. It took a mere five seconds into the power play for the Redhawks to breakdown the Storms’ defensive effort, tying the game at one. Now on a 5-4 power play advantage, the Redhawks found the net again at 7:24 to take a 2-1 lead.

The Storm tied it up 2-2 with under seven minutes to go in the first. Kyle Lampert and Taylor Staples found Kevin Meixel, who put the puck into the net for the game-tying goal.

The Redhawks didn’t waste time. Less than thirty seconds after the Storm tied the game, the Redhawks took back their one goal lead 3-2, ending the scoring action for the first period.

Due to a Redhawk penalty at the end of the first carrying over to the second, the Storm came out refreshed and ready to take full advantage of their power play opportunity. The Storm scored within the first minute of the second to yet again tie the game 3-all. Corey Goff scored the power play goal for the Storm, assisted by Staples–his second assist of the evening.

Besides the Storm goal, the first half of the second period was quiet. The Storm and Redhawks were tied for just over twelve minutes before Minnehaha decided enough was enough. The Redhawks scored three goals in the final four minutes to send the Storm into the locker room at the end the second period trailing 6-3.

The third period added four more Redhawk goals, taking the victory over the Storm 10-3.

Fairmont 4, MBA Storm 3

A fair third place matchup between the Fairmont Cardinals and the Storm took place on Friday, Dec. 27.

Both teams hadn’t won a game all season, so it set up to be an evenly talented game from the get-go. In the end, the Cardinals edged out the 4-3 win over the Storm in overtime.

The Storm got on the board first, but after that the scoring was back and forth with the Storm having the one goal lead or being tied throughout the entire game.

Gimberlin got the Storm on the board first with a pass from Cole Watzke with just over three minutes into the game, then Fairmont tied it up just over half way through the first period.

In the second, Goff found the net off a Bo Olson pass at 8:30 to put the Storm back up 2-1. That lead didn’t last long for the Storm as Fairmont tied it back up 2-all less than 10 seconds later.

Nate Vipond scored his second goal of the season against Fairmont, but Fairmont, yet again, tied it up 3-all, sending the game into an extra session where Fairmont scored and took the win 4-3.

Tony Bruns, freshman goalie for the Storm, ended the game with 27 saves, keeping his save percentage at 81-percent so far this season.

The next Storm game is Saturday, Jan. 4 when they travel with the girls to Worthington. The boys face off against the Trojans at 3:00 p.m. Then continuing their season on the road, the Storm will travel to Redwood Valley on Tuesday, Jan. 7.
