Celebrate the Fourth (on the third) in Hancock
The Hancock Lions are once again preparing for the 4th of July celebration. They are planning to celebrate the 4th of July on July 3 (Saturday) this year.
There will once again be a parade and the Lions encourage the participants in the parade to focus on the utilization of the red, white and blue colors along with flags.
The flag embodies the spirit that ties our country together. This year the Lions want to make the flag the center of the Hancock celebration. The Lions have chosen the theme this year to be "Hooray for the Red, White and Blue."
The majority of events will be held on Saturday, July 3. However, there will be some special music events on Friday evening. At Inn Like Flinn's you can relax and enjoy Kim Wolf DJ music from 9-1. Buddies Bar and Grill will also have music featuring 'Joy Ride' from 9-1.
Events on the Fourth will start out at 7 a.m. with the Firemen Relief Association annual pancake breakfast at the Hancock Community Center. They will be serving until 9:30 a.m.
While they are serving up the food the Lions Club members will be rounding up the runners and walkers for the 5K Run/Walk around Page Lake. Registration for the event will begin at 7:30 a.m. with the race starting at 8 a.m. To register please contact Troy Hausman at 392-5825. Prizes will be awarded in several age categories.
Another traditional event will begin at 10 a.m. at the Little League field near the school. The Little League All-Star game will be played at that time. During this and several of the other events the Hancock Lions Club will have their popcorn wagon open for business. Profits from these sales help defray the cost of the celebration so be sure to stop by for some pop or popcorn during the day.
Around noon an extended food court will be set up at the Water Tower Park. The West Central Cattlemen and Horton 4-H will be grilling again and Buddies will also be having a booth. Ice cream treats will be available in front of the Congregational Church. Thrivent will also have an ice cream stand.
While feasting on the food you can watch the children play on the inflatibles set up at the Water Tower Park and wait for the parades to begin. The girls basketball team will be providing supervision.
Also in the downtown area the annual Kiddie Parade will be organizing. Children who wish to be part of the Kiddie Parade should meet at the Water Tower Park at 12:30 and the parade will begin at 1 p.m. There is no need to register, simply show up at the park to be part of the parade.
The main parade will start at 1:30 p.m. and follow the same route as in past years. The theme is 'Hooray for the Red, White and Blue' and entries can be reserved by contacting Dennis Schroeder, 392-5989 or Joel Flaten, 392-5109.
During the parade KJH Builders will be handing out registration forms for a playhouse give-away. Turn in these entries following the parade. Finalists will be drawn after the parade and the winner will be announced following the Prairie Pioneer Days parade on July 11. Tickets are free and you need not be present to win.
Following the parade, several special events will be taking place. The traditional tractor pull will start at 3 p.m. this year taking place across from Trico.
At the Community Center there will be Bingo from 3 to 4:30 p.m. sponsored by the Hancock Lions.
During this time Buddies Bar and Grill will be hosting a volleyball tournament in their back yard. You can sign up at Buddies either before or after the parade. Also around 8 p.m. Buddies will be holding their annual hot dog eating contest. The winner of the contest will be awarded a DVD player. Sign up at Buddies.
Inn Like Flinn's will be holding their traditional street dance in front of their business that evening. The dance will be to the music of 'Electric Almighty'. This will run from 8 p.m. until 1 a.m.
Rounding out the day will be the traditional Hancock fireworks which will begin at dusk and be shot off at the ball park. Sit and enjoy at ground level at the ball park or from the comfort of your car anywhere surrounding the community.
