City, state candidate forums scheduled for October 11 in Morris

MORRIS - Candidates running for the Morris City Council and the Minnesota House and Senate will meet for two separate candidate forums on Thursday, Oct. 11 at the American Legion in Morris.

At 6:30, all six candidates for city council will participate in a one-hour forum organized by the city of Morris, the Morris Sun Tribune, and KMRS/KKOK.

Three people have filed for an open two-year term on the city council - James Henricks, Brian Solvie, and Joshua Gladis. Three candidates have also filed for two open four-year terms on the city council - Kevin Wohlers, Kara Splitstoser-Robertson, and William Storck.

Starting at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 11, the Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities and the city of Morris will host a legislative candidate forum that will focus on issues important to rural communities, including property taxes, the state budget and economic development.

Candidates for Senate District 12 - Torrey Westrom and John Schultz - are confirmed for the forum. Three candidates for House District 12A will also attend, Scott Dutcher, Jay McNamar and Dave Holman

Sheri Breen, assistant professor of political science at the University of Minnesota, Morris, will serve as the moderator for both forums.

Kim Ukura

Kim Ukura began working at the Farmington/Rosemount Independent Town Pages in August of 2016. Previously, she served as the editor of the Morris Sun Tribune for five years. She graduated from the University of Minnesota, Morris in 2008 with degrees in English and journalism. She earned a master's degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 2010. Prior to returning to Morris to work at the Sun Tribune, she worked in trade publishing. She has been recognized by the Minnesota Newspaper Association for human interest, multimedia, business and public affairs reporting.
