Construction to begin soon at courthouse
Bids for the first phase of Stevens County's courthouse building project were accepted by the Stevens County Board of Commissioners this week.
The bids came in about 15 percent under the project management group's estimate.
Bids for the initial phase of construction, which is scheduled to begin this fall, were opened last week at the courthouse. Bids were opened for nine of the 10 categories in phase one of the project.
The total of the nine categories totaled $1,786,636, which is about 15 percent under the $2.1 million estimate by Contegrity Group, which is the project management firm. The total does not include the cost of the pre-made holding rooms. Steel Cell of North America, the only bidder in the category, did not secure its bid and its envelope was not opened.
Contegrity set up its construction trailer late this week, and contractors are expected to be on-site beginning next week to make construction preparations, said Larry Filippi, Contegrity's project manager.
The bids were for demolition and site work, concrete, precast concrete, masonry, structural steel, steel erection, waterproofing, geothermal wells and electrical.
The construction schedule calls for the buildings to be enclosed to allow work to continue over the winter. The second phase projects will be bid later this fall.
The entire project -- which includes a courthouse renovation, construction of a law enforcement center and courts holding rooms for prisoners -- is estimated to cost about $11.5 million.
