Cougar golfers off to great start

The University of Minnesota, Morris women's golf team started the season with a pair of duel meets and a tournament championship.

After winning the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference title last season, the Cougars are looking to repeat as champions this year.

UM-Morris 378

Northwestern 435

The Cougars won their season opener over host Northwestern 378 - 435.

Leading the pack of golfers was Junior Ashley Watson who shot a 91, whose score was good enough to take medalist honors. Joining her on the leaderboard were Catlin Hanson who shot a 92, and Julie Althoff with a 96. Stephanie Trnka and Olivia Bennett each logged 99s, and Lianna Sanders, who shot a 126, rounded out the Cougar scoring.

"I'm extremely pleased with the scores that all six players turned in for our first competition even with the chilly and windy conditions," said coach Jana Koehler. "Hopefully our team score today (378) is a good indication of how our season will continue."

Northwestern 401

After getting rained out on Monday, the Cougars got back on the course on Tuesday with a win over Presentation College 387 - 401.

Watson continued her great start to the season by

posting a score of 87. She was the medalist of the match for the second week.

Joining her on the leaderboard were Hanson who shot a 92, Trnka had a 104, Althoff logged a 108, and Bennett rounded out the Cougar scoring with a 109.

UMAC tournament

The Cougars finished in first place at the UMAC regular-season tournament in Minneapolis with a combined score of 381. Following UMM was Presentation with a 422, Northwestern logged a 437, and Martin Luther had a 467.

Out of the twenty players in the event, all of the UMM players finished in the top five.

The medalist for the invite was Trnka who shot a 90. She was also the UMAC regular season tournament champion. Altoff finished tied for second overall with a 96. Watson was fourth overall with a 97 and Bennett and Hanson were both tied for fifth overall with a 98.
