The University of Minnesota, Morris men's basketball team went on the road for the first time this season traveling to take on Minnesota State Moorhead on Friday night. The Dragons picked up the 88-58 win after starting the game hitting seven of their first nine shots from the field.
Morris was led by Steve Birman who had 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Evan Reller had eight points and Ben Hoidal had seven points and seven rebounds.
The Dragons started off on fire going up 17-2 over the first five minutes. The Cougars cut the lead to nine at 23-14 after three straight free throws by Hoidal with 9:49 left in the first half.
MSUM went on a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 18 at 34-16 with 6:03 left in the half. Morris was only able to cut the lead to 15 twice before the Dragons went into halftime with the 47-27 lead.
The Dragons extended their lead to 26 in the first three and a half minutes of the second half thanks to an 8-0 run. The Cougars were unable to cut into the lead as the Dragons pulled away late picking up the 88-58 win.
MSUM hit 55.7 percent from the field as the Cougars struggled shooting 31.0 percent from the field. Both teams struggled from behind the arc but the Cougars shot 27.8 percent compared to the Dragons' 18.2. MSU Moorhead outscored UMM 16-5 in points off turnovers
