Cougar men win opening round
The Cougars led from start to finish, defeating Presentation College 78-59 in the opening round of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament Tuesday at the University of Minnesota, Morris.
The No. 4 seed Cougars advanced to the semi-final round Thursday at St. Scholastica, the No. 1 seed. The Saints have won eight straight conference games and have split with the Cougars, winning on their home court.
The Cougars used 62.1 percent (18-29) shooting in the first half to take a comfortable 42-26 lead at the half. With six minutes remaining in the second half, the Cougars had a 25-point advantage hitting 56.5 percent (13-23) from the field.
Presentation shot 34.6 percent (9-26) in the first half and 41.4 percent (12-29) in the second.
At the free-throw line the Cougars were 14-of-23, while Presentation was 10-of-16.
Zach Meyer led the Cougars with 24 points, hitting four of four at the free-throw line.
Jeremy Bosch and Kendall Proell added 13 points apiece.
Also scoring for the Cougars were Daniel Fragodt with nine, Clay Fischer with eight. John Hammer with four, Jamin Ivers with three, and Mitch Primus and Kyle Bruns with two each.
The Cougars out rebounded the Saints 39-26. Fragodt, Proell, and Meyer all grabbed six rebounds for the Cougars.
Proell dished out a team-high seven assists, while Fragodt recorded five assists and four steals.
Primus led the team with four blocks.
