Cougar men wrap up season with 1-0 win
MORRIS - The University of Minnesota, Morris men's soccer team ended the regular season with a 1-0 win Saturday, getting a late second-half goal to top Bethany Lutheran.
The story of the game was another great defensive effort by both teams. In the first half there were only seven total shots, all of them from Morris. The two teams had one combined save, coming on a Michael Schuweiler shot in the seventh minute.
The second half followed more of the same story, with the defenses halting the offenses. The shots did increase to 13, though, including six on goal. Then in the 67th minute the Cougars subbed in Michael Ward, and 10 minutes later were finally able to get on the board.
In the 79th minute the Cougars received a corner kick, with Matt Johnson taking the attempt. After his kick into the box, Bethany Lutheran was unable to clear it, and Ward got a foot on the loose ball to put the Cougars on the board.
In the final minutes the Vikings did not go away easy, as Bethany Lutheran had two shots on goal in the final three minutes. Both shots were blocked, however, and the Cougars were able to secure their 11th win of the season and 10th in conference play.
With their win total, the Cougars have now won double digit games in every season but their inaugural campaign. Their 10th win in UMAC action this year is their third season with double digit wins in conference play.
With the regular season over and post-season play on the horizon, the Cougars are the No. 2 seed in the upcoming UMAC Tournament, and will play host to Northwestern this Tuesday (Nov. 1) at 2 p.m. at Cougar Field
