Cougar swimmers break more records at Minnesota Challenge
The University of Minnesota Morris, swimming and diving team continued to break records at the Minnesota Challenge Feb. 3 and 4.
On the weekend, the Cougars finished with three new school records.
In the first day at the Minnesota Challenge, the Cougars broke yet another record, this time in the 400-yard medley relay during the meet's first session.
Melissa Johnson, Kayla Gastecki, Jessica Fischer, and Sarah Dens teamed up to finish in 4:21.47, smashing the two-year-old record of 4:24.27.
No team scores were kept in the meet, which is one of the largest in the country and features teams from across Division I, II, and III.
Fischer also set a career best on the day, with her times in the 500-yard freestyle. Fisher touched the wall in 5:43.46 in the 500-free, dropping four tenths of her previous best set in her freshman season.
Gastecki finished the 200-individual medley with a 2:21.60 mark, posting her second-best time of the season.
In their second day at the Minnesota Challenge, the Cougars had more record breaking performances.
First off, Gastecki set a new standard in the 100-yard breast stroke, posting a 1:12.55 to take the record away from teammate Andelee Quast, who set the mark just this season.
In the 800-freestyle relay, Gastecki anchored a crew that included Dens, Fischer and Jackie Hanson as they smashed the previous mark. They teamed up to finish in 8:34.85, dropping 11 seconds off the record set last season.
Gastecki also posted a 5:05.12 in the 400 individual medley, with Fischer adding a 1:05.85 in the 100-yard butterfly to round out their days. In the 200-yard freestyle, Quast posted a 2:14.73, with Melissa Johnson touching the wall in 1:08.22 in the 100-yard backstroke.
In the day's other relay, Johnson, Jodie Roy, Hanson and Kristina Roe teamed up for a 2:09.08 in the 200-medley.
With the "regular season" wrapped up, the Cougars will now take this weekend off, before heading to the annual Liberal Arts Championships at Principia College in Elsah, Ill
