Cougar women cap off perfect UMAC season
MORRIS – The University of Minnesota, Morris women’s basketball team finished the regular season undefeated in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play to take the top seed in the tournament.
As the No. 1 seed, the Cougars will host St. Scholastica on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
UM-Morris 104, Bethany 42
Kendra Wycoff broke a school record with nine made three pointers on Friday night as the Cougars ran away from Bethany Lutheran 104-42. Wycoff finished with a career-high 33 points as she shot 12-of-21 from the field.
As a team the Cougars hit 17 of 33 three-point attempts as five Cougars hit a three pointer. Emily Mehr had 21 points, Kayla Kraemer had 16, and Kelsey Erickson had 10 points. Erickson also added seven rebounds and eight assists before exiting with 4:44 left in the game. Abby Fragodt had 11 rebounds and four points.
The Cougars outscored BLC 36-12 in points in the paint.
The Cougars scored the first eight points of the game and then leading 12-5 went on a 12-0 run to take a commanding 24-5 lead with 11:18 left in the game. The lead would grow as large as 34 as Emily Auch hit a layup with 28 seconds left in the half.
The Cougars led 52-18 at the break. Mehr had 16 to lead the team at the break and Wycoff had 15. Erickson had seven rebounds and six assists in the first half.
Wycoff caught fire midway through the half and hit a three pointer on three straight possessions to give UMM an 81-23 lead with 11:27 left in the game. Leah Peterson swished a three pointer with 3:52 left in the game putting the Cougars over the century mark.
UM-Morris 104, Bethany 42
The Cougars capped off a perfect UMAC regular season with a 71-53 win over Martin Luther on Saturday afternoon.
Mehr led the way with 20 points on Saturday, hitting eight of 10 free throws. Mehr went over 1,500 career points in the game on Saturday.
Wyoff added 16 and Kraemer had 12. Fragodt had 10 rebounds, five points, and four blocks. Erickson had nine points, six rebounds, six assists, and two steals.
The Cougars overcame a slow first half in which they shot 31.3 percent from the field and just 2-of-14 from behind the arc.
Morris outscored Martin Luther 9-2 in fast break points in the first 20 minutes of action.
The defense held Martin Luther to just 29 percent from the field in the first half on just 9-of-31 shooting.
MLC jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first three and a half minutes of action. The Cougars pulled within one on a couple occasions, but did not take the lead until Mehr hit back-to-back lay-ups to give UMM the 22-20 lead with 4:14 left in the half. UMM finished the first half on a 13-4 run to take a 29-24 in the locker room.
Out of the break Morris scored the first six points of the half to take a double-digit lead 35-24 with 17:50 left in the game. Martin Luther cut the lead to five with under 13 minutes left in the game, but the Cougars responded with a 10-0 run to take a commanding 54-39 lead with 8:55 left. The Knights never got back within 10 as the Cougars went on to win 71-53.
