Cougar women take top honors at own invite
The University of Minnesota, Morris women's golf team hosted the annual Cougar Invite Friday, Sept. 24, and posted the top three finishers en route to a 413 to take top honors.
Originally scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 23, wet weather in the area forced the tournament back one day, which reduced the original field of seven teams down to three, as prior obligations forced much of the field out of competition.
Upper Midwest Athletic Conference rivals Martin Luther and Presentation were still able to make the trip, and faced off with the Cougars at Benson Country Club. On a day that began cool and windy with overcast skies, the Cougars combined for a 125-over, 413, to better Presentation with a +170, 458 and Martin Luther with a +293, 581.
The Cougars have been led by Stephanie Trnka and Ashley Watson all season, as the two had combined to take medalist honors four times. Again at the Cougar Invite, they shared the honors by each coming in at 100, to finish 28-over on the day. The two were four strokes ahead of teammate Caitlin Hanson, who came in third at 104.
Olivia Bennet posted a 109 and gave the Cougars four of the top five finishers in the final standings.
The only non Cougar to crack the top-five was Presentations' Ashley Rolstad, who placed fourth with a 107. Martin Luther was led by Lauren Grove in sixth with a 110.
