Cougar women win home opener

The University of Minnesota, Morris women’s soccer team split a pair of non-conference games.

Three second-half goals resulted in a 4-0 loss for the Cougars, as Hamline sent 11 shots on goal Sunday, Sept. 8.

Morgan Delaney made seven saves, but the Pipers used a late rally to pull away.

The scoring got started in the 16th minute as Hamline broke free for a breakaway goal.

Morris kept the Pipers off the scoreboard for the next forty minutes, but in the 58th minute a long shot found its way in the net making it 2-0.

Hamline added a goal in the 63rd and 90th minute to seal the victory.

Morris had four shots, two on net, but could not break through as they fell to 0-2 on the season.

UM-Morris 7, UW-Superior 1

The Cougars won their home opener picking up a 7-1 win over Wisconsin-Superior on Sunday, Sept. 15.

Emma LaChance had a pair of goals and an assist in the win. Four other scorers picked up a goal for the Cougars.

The scoring got started in the sixth minute as  LaChance finished off a ball that was initially saved by the YellowJacket keeper. The ball sat on the goal line before LaChance knocked it into the back of the net.

Seven minutes later Kebra Rogers hit a ball across the six-yard box. It was deflected in the net by a Wisconsin-Superior defender. Rogers got in the scorebook in the 29th minute as she received a pass just inside the 18-yard box and hit the ball low into the right corner.

Carly Denler scored her first goal as a member of Minnesota Morris in the 40th minute as she hit a ball from about 25 yards out. Emily Moore picked up the assist on the goal as UMM went into the break with a 4-0 lead.

The YellowJackets got on the board in the 52nd minute thanks to a free kick that sailed over Torri Jordan and into the net.

LaChance responded immediately, scoring less than a minute later. Rogers took a shot that hit the post and slid across to LaChance who knocked it in.

Rachael Berns added a goal in the 66th minute after Moore gave her the ball off a pass.

Meaghan Delaney scored her first goal as a Cougar in the 72nd minute as she created space in the middle of the field and put the shot over the head of the Superior keeper.
