Cougars earn UMAC tournament berth

Minnesota Morris (14-8, 9-3) men clinched a spot in the UMAC tournament with an 84-69 win over St. Scholastica (9-14, 6-6 UMAC) on Saturday evening. Neil Helgeson was perfect from the field on the night and finished with a career high 20 points.
St. Scholastica came out on fire, especially Jake Naslund who had 16 points in first 10:30 to help the Saints take a 21-17 lead. Minnesota Morris put together a 15-2 run; including three straight made three pointers to take a 34-25 lead with 2:20 left in the first half. The Saints clawed their way back and pulled to within three at 36-33 at the half.
The Saints scored the first four points of the second half and took a one point lead. Morris responded with a 17-4 run to take a 12 point lead with 14:43 left on the clock. Helgeson hit his fourth three-pointer in the game extending the Cougars lead to 16 with 11:54 left in the contest. Minnesota Morris would lead by as much as 19 in the second half and coasted to a win.
Both teams shot the three well on the night, UMM finished 8-16 and CSS finished 10-22 from behind the arc. Brendon Foss had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. He now has 967 career points with at least three games to play in his Cougar career. RJ Dean added 12 points and five rebounds and Cody Emrick scored 11 points and had three assists.
The Cougars had 32 bench points as well as 32 points in the paint, outscoring the Saints in both categories. They also outrebounded St. Scholastica 40-25 on Saturday night.
Next weekend the Cougars are on the road to take on Bethany Lutheran as they try to wrap up a home UMAC tournament game.
