Cougars fall to Northland

A late rally in the second game of a doubleheader with Northland (13-11, 10-2 UMAC) came up short and the Cougars (12-12, 7-4 UMAC) could not manage a split with the Lumberjacks on Tuesday afternoon. Minnesota Morris fell 10-2 in the first game and 10-9 in the second game.
The Cougars next host Martin Luther College in a three game series with a single game being played on Friday at 3 p.m. and a doubleheader being played on Saturday starting at noon.
Northland 10, UM-Morris 2
Northland took advantage of a Cougar error in the top of the first to score a pair of runs and take a 2-0 lead. Eric Terres led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle, getting UMM started. Jake Schmitz moved him to second with a single to through the right side. After a fielder's choice saw Terres get cut down at third, Kylan Hill singled to right scoring Schmitz and cutting the deficit to one.
The Lumberjacks scored a run in the top of the fourth, taking a two run lead once again. They would open the game up in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs on two hits and a Cougar error. Morris cut the lead to four in the seventh but left the bases loaded, missing out on a chance to run down the Lumberjacks. Northland would end up pulling away, taking the game 10-2.
Colin Moberly went the distance for Northland, allowing just five Cougar hits and striking out six. Kylan Hill and Scott Peterson each had an RBI in game one.
Northland 10, UM-Morris 9
It took little bit for the offenses to get going in the second game of the doubleheader, but once it heated up both teams scored often. After a quick first two innings Northland poured in six runs in the third, thanks to six hits. A ten pitch RBI walk seemed to get Northland going in the inning, and they scored five of their six runs after the walk.
Minnesota Morris responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, cutting the Northland lead to four. Eric Terres had an RBI single and he scored the second run of the inning thanks to a Northland error.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars took advantage of two more Lumberjack errors to score three runs and cut the deficit to one at 6-5. Peterson, Doug Zimmel and Terres all had an RBI in the inning. The Lumberjacks answered with two runs in the top of the fifth but UMM kept the pressure on with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Christian Korlath drove in Cody Reinke with a RBI groundout.
Leading by two, Northland got insurance runs in the eighth and ninth pushing their lead to four. The Cougars rallied in their last at-bats.
Back-to-back singles started the rally putting runners on first and second with nobody out. A ball snuck under the Jacks' shortstop allowing a run to score. Schmitz singled to pull Morris within two at 10-8 and still nobody was out. After a fielder's choice Hill singled to load the bases up with one out. Korlath hit a ball to left field that was caught by a diving left fielder for the second out but a run did score making it 10-9. Unfortunately, the Cougars could no tie the game up as Northland's starting pitcher finished off his complete game with a strikeout.
Terres and Korlath each had two RBI in the second game. Every starter had a hit in the second game of the doubleheader.
