Cougars open UMAC schedule 3-1

The University of Minnesota, Morris softball team opened up conference play with a split at Martin Luther and two wins hosting Bethany Lutheran. The Cougars are 3-1 the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.

UM-Morris 12

Martin Luther 3

The Cougars traveled to New Ulm April 3 for a double header with Martin Luther and opened with a 12-3 win over the Knights in six innings.

Emilie Kalvig pitched an entire game for the Cougars, allowing eight hits, one earned run, one walk, and struck out four.

The Cougars took an early lead, scoring four runs in the first inning. The Cougars added two more in the second, and three in the fourth and sixth innings.

Martin Luther scored single runs in the first, third, and fourth innings.

For the Cougars, Liz Leuty scored four runs and recorded two RBIs on two hits.

Diane Blommel had three runs, two RBIs, one hit, and the Cougars' only walk.

Bailey Jelle scored two runs on two hits and recorded two RBIs.

Heidi Miller scored one run, and had two hits and two RBIs.

Anne Bergstrom had one hit good for an RBI.

Bri Czer and Ashley Splonskowski each scored one run on one hit.

Martin Luther 11

The Knights turned things around in game two, scoring two, three, and four unanswered runs in the first three innings on their way to an 11-6 win.

The Cougars got on the score board in the fourth with five runs and added another in the fifth.

Martin Luther added two in the bottom of the sixth to start the seventh inning up 11-6. The Cougars could only manage three runs in the top of the seventh.

Stephanie Wilson pitched two innings for the Cougars. She allowed nine hits, eight earned runs, and one walk.

Kelli Hamilton pitched four innings, allowing four hits, two runs, one earned.

Blommel, Jelle, and Heather Briese led the Cougars with three hits apiece. Briese scored three times and recorded one RBI. Blommel had two RBIs.

Czer scored two runs and had two RBIs on two hits.

Leuty had one hit, two RBIs, and scored once.

Hamilton had one run on one hit.

Jennifer Noordmans had one hit and one run in one at bat.

Bergstrom had one run and Miller had one hit.

The Cougars held their home opener on the artificial turf of Big Cat Stadium Wednesday when they hosted the Vikings.

The Cougars jumped out to a 7-0 lead after just one inning of play.

Bethany scored one in the third and three in the fifth.

The Cougars added two more in the bottom of the sixth.

Kalvig pitched seven innings, giving up 10 hits, three earned runs, and struck out two.

Seven Cougars crossed home plate, with Leuty and Jelle scoring twice.

Leuty had a team-high three hits and one RBI.

Blommel had one hit and one RBI.

Briese had one hit and two RBIs.

Miller had one hit.

Julie Rohling had two hits and one RBI.

Splonskowski had two hits and one RBI.

On the defensive end, Bergstrom had 10 put outs at first base.

UM-Morris 12

The Cougars defeated the Vikings in five innings in game two of the double header.

UMM started out slow, scoring two in the first and three in the third, before blowing the game wide open with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Cougars still had one out remaining when they took the 10-point lead to end the game.

The Vikings scored their runs in the third and fourth innings.

Kalvig pitched four innings, allowing five hits, two runs, both earned, and striking out three.

Wilson got the save, giving up only one hit.

Leuty scored three times on three hits and recorded three RBIs.

Blommel had three runs on three hits.

Noordmans scored twice with one hit and one RBI.

Jelley and Briese each scored once on two hits and batted in two apiece.

Bergstrom and Rohling scored the other two Cougar runs.
