The University of Minnesota, Morris volleyball team swept Crown College 25-19, 25-17, 25-22 on Tuesday for their 20th win of the season. It is the second time in three years UMM has reached 20 wins and just the sixth time in school history a Cougar team has reached 20 wins.
Three different Cougars had seven kills in the match to lead the team including Emily Auch, Abby Tietz, and Addie Vancura. Kaylie Clark, the UMAC Defensive Player of the Week, had 19 digs in the match as the Cougars held the Storm to just .037 hitting on the night. Eleven blocks also contributed to the low hitting percentage, as Hannah Knot had six block assists herself.
The match featured 22 ties and nine lead changes as the Cougars won their fourth straight match and 11th out of 12.
The 20 wins are tied for the third highest in school history and three wins shy of second most in school history. Morris has four matches remaining with three regular season matches and at least one UMAC Tournament match on the schedule.
The first set was back and forth until late in the set when the Cougars scored three straight points to extend a 19-17 lead to 22-17. Crown called a time out to try and slow the Cougars down and scored two straight points to make 22-19 before a block from Knot and Jennifer Schmidt and then an attack error and service ace from Auch to give UMM the 25-19 win.
Morris jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the second set and did not look back, increasing the lead to as large as 10 on three separate occasions. Crown never got back within six as UMM won the set 25-17.
It was a competitive third set as it went back and forth early on. Crown took a 13-10 lead and the Cougars played catch up until tying the match at 14. The Storm kept UMM from overtaking them until late in the set when a kill by Vancura put UMM up 19-18. Crown tied the match at 22, but a service ace followed by an Auch kill and attack error gave the Cougars the 25-22 win.
Minnesota Morris will be back in action on Friday taking on Northwestern at 7 p.m. in St. Paul
