Cougars show power in sweep
UMM Sports Information
Minnesota Morris (11-13, 6-4 UMAC) softball earned a sweep over Northwestern on Saturday, winning 13-4 and 14-0. Both games ended in five innings due to the run rule. Sam Hanson and Jordan Iverson each had three RBI in game one. Kristy Hoge had three RBI in the second game to lead the offense.
Morris was dominant from the opening pitch in the first game, scoring two runs on a one out double by Hanson. The Cougars then took control in the second inning, taking advantage of Northwestern errors. Morris scored six unearned runs in the inning; Molly Olson had the big hit in the inning, connecting on a two run double.
The Cougars then added five more runs over the next three innings, putting the game away and winning 13-4.
Game two started much like game one as UMM scored early and often. Minnesota Morris scored twice in the first inning and then added five more in the second inning. The big inning came in the seventh as the Cougars had five hits and scored seven times, doubling their lead. Mackenzie Weatherly finished with a complete game shutout, allowing just five hits.
The Cougars are now home for their next three doubleheaders Wednesday through Friday, April 16-18. On Wednesday, the Cougars host Crown College. On Thursday, St. Scholastica comes to town, and the Cougars will complete the homestand Friday against Northland.
