Cougars split in Florida on day one

The University of Minnesota, Morris Cougar softball (1-3) split their opening day in Florida, beating Curry (1-1) 2-1 and falling 3-0 to Mount Saint Mary (1-1). Sam Hanson went the distance in game one, allowing just six hits. Kristy Hoge had an RBI in the first game driving in Jordan Iverson. Meghan Pomeroy stole home picking up the other run.
Iverson and Hanson each had a hit in the game as well. In the circle Hanson struck out six allowing just one earned run. The Cougars scored both their runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Curry responded with a run in the top of the third but Hanson did not allow a runner past second over the next three innings. In the top of the seventh, Curry put runner on second and third with two outs but Hanson got a fly ball out to left field, ending the threat.
Against Mount Saint Mary, the Cougars were held to just one hit, coming off the bat of pitcher Mackenzie Weatherly in the top of the fifth. The Knights picked up three runs in the bottom of the fourth and held on for the win.
Weatherly pitched well in the circle allowing seven hits and striking out five in six innings of work. She got seven fly ball outs and six ground ball outs on the day and forced the Knights to leave seven runners on base.
