Cougars suffer 1st football loss
The University of Minnesota, Morris football team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday, with a 50-21 setback to Wisconsin Lutheran in nonconference action.
After opening the season 2-0, with two Upper Midwest Athletic Conference games, the Cougars got a break from conference action with the Warriors.
UMM went down 14-0 early, and trailed 27-0 at the break before scoring 21 third-quarter points. Wisconsin Lutheran put an end to the UMM scoring rally and capped the game with 11 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to seal the 50-21 victory.
The Warriors outgained the Cougars 408-218 in game, and held UMM to under three yards per play, while averaging nearly six.
Todd Gramenz was the big gainer on the day for the Cougars, racking up 75 yards on the ground on 14 carries. The bulk of his yardage came on the Cougars' final touchdown late in the third, when he broke free for a 68-yard scamper, on the first play of the drive.
Through the air, Derrick Foss paced UMM with 63 yards and a touchdown on 6-of-19 passing with one interception. Early in the third, Foss connected with Devon Johnson on a three-yard scoring strike to get the Cougars on the board.
As the Warriors built up their early lead, they did so in quick fashion, scoring on drives of three, five, two and eight plays respectively. Two of those drives lasted less than a minute with the longest coming in just under four minutes.
The Cougars controlled the ball for nearly 10 minutes in the first quarter, but came away without anything to show for it.
The Warriors did their damage by finishing off drives and going a perfect 5-for-5 in the red zone on the day.
Nate Lund paced the defense with a game-high 12 tackles, including five solo stops. Lund also registered one pass break up from his cornerback spot and 0.5 tackles for a loss. Zach Miller was next in line, finishing with nine tackles and two tackles for loss.
