Cougars swept by Scots

The University of Minnesota, Morris softball season did not get off to the start the Cougars (0-2) wanted, falling 9-0 and 12-1 to the Macalester Scots (5-1) on Wednesday, March 5. Minnesota Morris mustered just three hits in the first game. The Scots used two big innings in game two to claim the sweep.
Macalester scored a run in each of the first and third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Molly Olson tripled with two outs in the bottom of the first but was stranded. She also drew a walk in the sixth, reaching base twice in three at-bats. Shelby Peterson was 2-2 on the day; singling in the third and doubling in the fifth.
The Scots would break the game open in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs. Three of the four runs were unearned due to a one out error. In the sixth inning a three run homerun put the game away giving the Scots a 9-0 lead.
Mackenzie Weatherly kept the Scots off the board for the first two innings but did not get much help for her offense. The Cougars managed three hits in their first three offensive half innings but did not score. Macalester busted loose for seven runs in the bottom of the third and then five more in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 12-0 lead. Morris picked up a run in the top of the fifth. Clare Hamer led off with an single and scored on a double by Gina Downie. Weatherly finished with three strikeouts in four innings.
Minnesota Morris will now travel to Fort Myers, Florida for ten games in five days, starting on Monday.
