Cougars' winning streak ends in women's soccer
First place was on the line Friday afternoon between the 9-2 University of Minnesota, Morris and 10-1 St. Scholastica. The Saints used a 70th minute header to earn the 1-0 win in this deciding Upper Midwest Athletic Conference match.
With just over a minute left in the first half Rachel Berns hit a ball from about 20 yards out that struck the cross bar keeping the score 0-0 going into halftime.
In the first half both the Cougars and the Saints had a shot on goal, but were unable to beat the keepers for each team.
St Scholastica had a golden chance in the 59th minute, but Rikki Beaver came up with a big save. Beaver came up big again in the 64th minute stopping another shot.
The scoreless streak of 668 minutes for the Cougars' defense was ended when St. Scholastica's Shannon Carlson headed a cross from Kelsey Kehtel into the back of the net. The goal proved to be the match winner for the Saints as they move into first place all alone in the UMAC
