Cougars wrap up track & field season

The University of Minnesota, Morris track and field teams wrapped up the regular season Thursday, May 17, competing at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse Qualifier.

Men's team

Leandro Dower came away with a top-10 tally, but could not drop any time in the 200-meter, finishing eighth with a 22.11. He entered the meet with a season high of 21.93 and was unable to move up in the national rankings and into NCAA Championship consideration.

Competing in two events, Zeke Miller finished with an 11.25 to place 21st in the 100-meter dash and a 22.47 to finish 14th in the 200. Miller's 200-meter mark was a career high, bettering his previous best of 23.00.

Women's team

Katia Vantries notched a season best in the discus throw with her 110-feet-06 (33.69m). She just missed a top-10 finish, coming in at 11th place. She then made it two personal records in one day with her 144-feet-06 (44.05m) in the hammer, adding nearly 10 feet to her previous best. She also moves into second place all-time at UMM with the throw, just six feet away from the school record.

Jennie LaRoque had the best finish of the day, coming in third in the high jump. She finished with a 5-feet-02.25, but could not improve her season best of 5-feet-5 from.

Also competing was Kat Nelson, who came away with a top-10 finish in the shot put and a top-15 in the hammer throw. In the shot put, she finished eighth with a 38-feet-02.25 (11.64m), just over a foot off her personal best. And in the hammer she came in 15th with a toss of 128-feet-03.

Championships

A pair of Cougars will get to continue their season, as Kaylie Clark and Linda Keller were chosen May 20 to compete at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Clark will be making her first NCAA appearance, competing in the javelin, while Keller returns for the second straight season, running the 5,000-meter.

Each holds the school record in their respective events. Clark enters the meet seeded 11th, while Keller is the 20th ranked competitor in her race.

Already a two-time UMAC champion in the javelin, the sophomore posted her qualifying toss on Apr. 14 in winning the Lee Krough Invitational with her career best 139-feet-09 (42.61m).

Keller continually dropped her 5,000-meter time throughout the season, most recently posting her qualifying time of 17:11.77 at the NCC Gregory Final Qualifier (May 15) in finishing second place.

The NCAA took the top-22 athletes in each event to the championship meet, held May 24-26 at Claremont McKenna-Harvey Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
