Belinda Dokken of Cyrus bought a $500,000 Extravaganza ticket at Waters Edge on S. Highway 29 in Starbuck on July 24. As Dokken was scratching the ticket, a patron sitting next to her said, "You never get big winners in these small towns." Dokken proved him wrong by becoming the first person to win the $500,000 top prize, according to the Minnesota State Lottery Web site.
"I saw a match on the bottom of the ticket," she recalled. "I kept looking at it, thinking, 'I'm not doing this right.'" Dokken said she showed the ticket to the other patron and the bartender and asked them, "You see what I see, don't you?"
According to the Lottery story, Dokken handed the ticket to the bartender and asked her to check it on the Lottery terminal, which generated a message that she needed to contact the Lottery. The bartender said, "This is big, Belinda." Dokken claimed her prize at Lottery headquarters in Roseville on July 25.
The $500,000 Extravaganza is a $20 scratch game that offers players a chance to win a $500,000 top prize. Four of five $500,000 prizes remain in the game. The overall odds of winning a prize are 1 in 2.99.
