Preschool/Kindergarten: We have been learning about our teeth. In this dental health unit the children learned about proper oral hygiene and developing good dental health habits. We discussed when and why it's important to brush, how to brush correctly, why flossing is important, and why dental checkups are important. In math we counted our teeth and made a graph that displayed how many students in our class have lost a tooth. We also compared animal teeth to ours, which helped us learn about the different types of teeth and their uses.
First and Second Grade News: The reading theme this past week was Folk Tales. We read a variety of Folk Tales including a favorite, Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears. We studied the characteristics of Folk Tales and located the origin of our stories on the world map. This week in math we worked on odd and even numbers, time and money. We also continue to practice our addition and subtraction facts using our on-line program called Math Facts in a Flash. This program is available for students to use from home as well.
Third and Fourth Grade News: This week in Math, we are learning about geometric solids, such as cubes, prisms, cones, and cylinders. On each shape, we can identify faces, vertices, edges, and corners. We are practicing for the MCAs in Reading and Math with a computer program called Study Island. After we do a good job on the test, the computer lets us play a quick game. It's so fun. We love to practice reading and math!
Fifth and Sixth Grade News: Fifth and Sixth grade students are exploring trickster tales. These stories include characters, which often are animals, in where the trickster fools others to get what he or she wants. These tales teach wisdom through symbolism otherwise known as, "the moral of the story". We will be performing two of these tales, "Coyote and the Rock" based upon a White River Sioux Legend and "How Thor Got His Hammer" a Norse Legend. It is a great way to see the trickster in action!
