Temperatures in the 60s and 70s this week have made it seem more like summer then spring. The snow is pretty much gone except for some patches in the trees and other sheltered areas. Nights are still cool though. I suspect that spring field work will begin in the not to distant future.


In St. John's/Kongsvinger parish news: Easter services will be held at Kongsvinger at 8:30 a.m. and at St. John's at 11 a.m. There is no Sunday school.

The West Central Area Word Alone chapter will meet on April 10 at Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck beginning with coffee fellowship at 9:30 a.m. and the program at 10 a.m. Please note the change of date.

There will be a worship service at the community hall in Hancock on April 11 at 10 a.m. This is a change of location. This is organized by a group of Lutherans who have decided to gather for a monthly worship service and are not affiliated with any group or church and are not presently planning on starting a new church.

The Donnelly Community Club will meet on April 12 at 7 p.m. at the hall in Donnelly.

Mark Koepke informs me that his aunt, Viola Kopel of White Bear Lake, formerly of Donnelly, passed away on March 29. Her husband Walt was butter maker in Donnelly for many years and a brother to Eddie (Lou) Kopel. The funeral will be held in White Bear Lake on April 10.

Evelyn Hollenbeck of Lowry, formerly of Donnelly, passed away on March 25.   Two cousins Janet (Pete) Nordstrom and Richard (Valerie) Olson are among the family members who survive her. Her parents were the late Allie and Meda Olsen of Donnelly -- he was a rural mail carrier for Donnelly for many years.

Nicole Gillespie recently finished her career as a member of the Tiger girls' basketball team by winning several awards: academic all American from the Minnesota Girls' basketball association, all conference, and defensive MVP. She is ranked ninth in career points and sixth in career rebounds.

Congratulations to the Herman-Norcross speech team, which finished 2nd in the Mach 18 competition at West Central Area. Landon and Paige Strand are members of the speech team and they earned first and fifth place ribbons at the meet.

Wally McCollar informs me that letters have gone out to the class of 1955 with details of their 55th class reunion. If you are a member of that class or know somebody that is and did not get a letter please get in touch with him ASAP.

Last month I reported that Don and Tammy Speer had been able to bring a Haitian orphan Islande to their home and begin the process of adopting her. Since then they have also been able to bring another orphan Auddy to their home too.

Josh Backman and Andrew Loher are among the members of the local National Guard troops scheduled to return home today (Saturday). The busses carrying the soldiers are scheduled to arrive in Morris about 11:45 a.m. and a welcome home ceremony will be held at 2:15 p.m. at the University of Minnesota, Morris.

Buyers from all over America and Canada attended the Wulf's annual Opportunity Sale, held March 27 at their farm south of Morris.

Dennis and Jan Melchert attended the Donnelly Fire Department's fish fry on March 27 at the Donnelly Hall.

I attended the "This and That" sale at the Federated Church in Morris on March 27. Later, a good crowd was on hand for the CNIA Pow Wow at the PE center on the UMM campus

Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended the community meal at the Morris Senior Center on March 29. Eystads also attended the Sunday school adopted grandparents event at St. John's on March 28.
