The past week has been hot and dry with only a few scattered showers in the area. Crops continue to look very good. The corn is probably the tallest it has ever been at this time of the year.

In parish news from St. John's/Kongsvinger: There will be communion services on July 25 at 8:30 a.m. at St. John's and 10:15 a.m. at Kongsvinger. The Vacation Bible School kickoff will be on Aug. 1 when Bethel of Herman will join the parish for joint services at St. John's at 10:30 a.m. Staff from Luther Crest will be leading the services, followed by a potluck dinner. This is a change from what was announced in the summer schedule.

If you have not yet registered your child(ren) for VBS, please do so soon. Registration forms are available from either church office.

Staff from St Luke's in Garfield will offer LCMC services at Solem Lutheran Church of rural Kensington  at 8:45 a.m. For details, call the church office at 320-834-2285.

The following events will take place today (Saturday).

There will be an ordination service for Seyward Mattson Ask at First Lutheran Church in Morris beginning at 2 p.m.

The LTD motorcycle ride will be held, beginning in Montevideo and going through Morris, at about 3 p.m. then ending up in Appleton.

Threshing Bee buttons are now on sale at various locations in Donnelly. Posters are also out and are being posted in the area. If you want one, stop into HD & Co. in Donnelly. 

Addison Smith was born on June 25 at SCMC to Chris and Janelle Smith. Grandparents are Leon and Marilyn Smith of Donnelly; Leonard and Darlene Hout of Red Lake Falls; great grandparents are Veronica Smith of Morris and Elsie Kalmia of Starbuck.

Wilma L. Matejka, of Sarasota, Fla., passed away on July 20. Survivors include a sister-in-law Lou (Eddie) Kopel of Donnelly.

Ruth (Devick) Sands of St. Anthony, formerly of Donnelly, passed away on July 17. Two sisters, Alice Holman and Corrine (Eldred) Jackson, are among the family members who survive her.

Congratulations to Tyler Rouske who was recently named to the West Central Conference team in boys track.

Nick and Karen Daly recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

The Bank of the West elementary softball team won the championship. Katie Giese is a member of that team and her dad, Brian was the coach. Becca Holland was a member of the Pedersen Granite team that finished as runner ups.

The Chokio-Alberta/ Herman-Norcross Cadets won the championship at the Chokio tournament. Levin Strand is a member of the team.

Ashley Dohlen recently graduated from Bethel College.

Sami Searle was selected to participate in the FFA National Leadership Forum in Washington, D.C. in June.

On July 16, the WCROC celebrated its centennial during their annual summer field day. Several crop tours showcased crops from the past 100 years. There was also a display of cream separating and hogs that were fed a diet from 100 and 60 years ago.

That afternoon, Wally McCollar and I along with several classmates from 1955 journeyed to Donnelly. Our tour included the school, bank and HD & Co. before having lunch at Sax's Café.

That evening, Jim and Lou Eystad and I spent some time at Pomme de Terre Park taking in some of the Relay for Life activities. 

On July 17 I traveled to Alberta for the Sons of the American Legion pancake feed. Later that day Herb Kloos and I were among those who took in the group work camp picnic at East Side Park. Later I represented my mom and aunt Mabel at the class of '55 banquet at the Prairie Inn. Among the former Donnelly area residents in attendance were Eddie Speer, Wayne Sperr, JoAnn Frank, Sonja Sather, Darrell Koehntop, David Aanerud, Curtis Sax, Wally McCollar, Mavis Chapman, and Maryann Manney.

The Threshing Bee royalty were participants in the Benson Kid's Day parade on July 17.

On July 18, Jim and Lou Eystad attended the WCL worship service at the Prairie Inn in Morris. Afterwards they traveled to Hoffman for the Jeff Hagen benefit. Pearl A. Anderson also attended that.

Joyce Steuck and I attended the farewell service, dinner and program for Rev. Todd Mattson and his family at First Lutheran Church in Morris.

On July 21, Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended the Thrivent Picnic at Pomme de Terre Park.
