The weather during the past week has been hot and humid with a few showers sprinkled in to freshen things up. Grain harvest is underway in the area.

In news from the St. John's/Kongsvinger parish: Communion services will be held on Aug. 8 at both churches. It is also Reclaim Sunday. This is a change from what was announced in the summer schedule.

The August newsletter is now out. Extra copies are available in the narthex of both churches.

The following events take place today (Saturday):

West Central Word Alone Ministry will meet on at Trinity Lutheran Church of Benson. Coffee will be served at 9:30 a.m. with the meeting at 10 a.m. The program will be a DVD presentation by Dr. Buda director for Africa national ministries of the ELCA.

Craig and Lori (Backman) Eveslage will host an open house wedding dance beginning at 8 p.m. at the Best Northland Prairie Inn in Morris.

The David F. Day Memorial Scholarship fishing tournament will be held on Lake Minnewaska from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. with headquarters at the Waters Edge in Starbuck. For more info call Rob Velde (320-288-6773), Jason Reed (320-287-0335) or Shane Nelson (320-288-6719).

Memorial services for Cathy (Borner) Engebly of Hoffman will be held at 11 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church in Hoffman. She passed away on Aug. 3.

There will be open house birthday parties for Grace (Gulbrandson) Derby (90); Arlene Gulbrandson (80), and Cleo (Gulbrandson) Gandrud (80) at the Eagles Club in Morris from 2-5 p.m. There will be lunch and a program.

The Donnelly Community Club will meet on Aug. 9 at 7 p.m. at the city hall. Work schedules for the Threshing Bee will be mailed out soon. Anyone else who has not been contacted is always welcome as "many hands make light work." We will have work nights on the grounds on the 24 and 31. Remember you can save a dollar by buying your button in advance and look for posters throughout the area.

Primary election day is Aug. 9. Most Donnelly area voters will vote at city hall in Donnelly.

Connor Harvey Flaten was born on June 22, 2010 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, to Justin and Carrie Flaten of Hancock. Grandparents are Harvey and Mary Flaten of Hancock and Chuck and Pat Dingman of Morris. Great grandparents are Millie Dingman of Morris and Eddie and Lou Kopel of Donnelly.

Amber Kruize and Scott Melberg are engaged to be married on Aug. 28, 2010 at Faith Lutheran Church in Morris. Amber is the daughter of Brian and Peg Kruize of Morris. Scott is the son of Robert and Sharon Melberg of Chokio.

Congratulations to the 14U baseball team that won the state tournament held in Austin July 23-25. Bryce Jergenson was a member of that team and his dad Rob was one of the coaches.

Adam Erickson and Katie Braaten were married on July 31 at Long Lake resort near Brandon.

There was a good crowd on hand for Hort Night at the WCROC gardens in Morris on July 29. The night included tours of flowers that would have been found in a 1910 garden. We also toured some of the research projects that are taking place around the farm.

Verle and Della Dunn and I attended the visitation for Donna Eystad Bahr on July 30. Later Steve Fults and I attended the visitation for Melvin Wohlers at the funeral home.

Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended the funeral for Donna Bahr in Morris on July 31. We also attended the Vacation Bible School kickoff service and dinner at St. John's on Aug. 1. That evening, the Eystads attended the sweet corn feed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alberta.

Dick Goldenstien attended the committal service for Wilma Matejka at Summit Cemetery on July 31. Wilma was his classmate and he and her husband Wayne double dated for many years.

I need to clarify an item from last week's column. Melvin and Donna Eystad bought the Donnelly truck service from Leonard Smith in the early '70s and later sold it to members of their family who still own and operate the business in Donnelly.

Andy Brevig and I attended the Stevens County Republican central committee meeting at Detoy's on Aug. 2. The party will have a booth at the Stevens County Fair again this year and is looking for volunteers to help out. If you are willing to spend a couple of hours or more sitting in there please call 589-1999 by Aug. 12.

The Donnelly Threshing Bee royalty attended the Miss Morris/Miss Midwest pageant on July 31.

Kelly Fults-Frank and Carrie Roske are new distributors for "What's Shakin." Kelly has also recently opened a real estate office in Morris.
